Lake Placid
Lake Placid is very special for our family. It's technically where The Harrises started! We were married at Whiteface Lodge on May 24, 2015 and we have gone back to Whiteface the last two years to celebrate our anniversary. Whiteface Lodge in my top 3 places to stay EVER! This place has it all: rustic vibes, 3 hot tubs, a heated indoor/outdoor pool, a bowling alley, a movie theater, tennis courts, boats you can take out on Lake Placid, the most delicious chocolate chip cookies I've ever eaten for FREE in your room, an ice cream parlor, spa, and I can't even remember what else because my brain got stuck thinking about the cookies. The best part about this place is that with all of these amenities, it doesn't feel like a massive hotel. It feels cozy with fireplaces everywhere and plenty of nooks to curl up with a book or some cards. To be candid, this hotel is a bit fancier than our normal digs, which does come with a price. It also comes with luxury bathrobes, huge en-suite jacuzzis, and good food in the restaurants. Each room is a suite that includes a full kitchen, dining table, and fireplace. There is the main restaurant in the Kanu room, but we prefer the lounge where you can order either at tables or sitting on the couches by the fire. It's a great place to have a cocktail and the last time we were there, a young girl with the most beautiful voice was singing country songs (swoon!). It's family friendly without feeling overrun by kids. I can't say enough about Whiteface Lodge and we hope to go back here year after year for our anniversary!
Some favorite places around Lake Placid:
Dartbrook Rustic Goods This is quite possibly one of my favorite stores ever. There are so many things in the store! It has everything from beautiful knickknacks to hand-made rustic furniture, art, bags, etc. They have a sister store walking distance from the main location that has more of the same, including kitchenware and rugs. It's a perfect place to pick up any gifts that you may need!
The Lake House If I could decorate my future house with any vibe, it would be these vibes...mid-century cabin vibes! The lobby/hang area is jaw dropping. You can grab a cocktail at the bar and sit on the couches by the fire playing games all night. It has a perfect location, right off the main drag and close to Mirror Lake. It's a great hotel, but also just a fun place to stop in for a drink and a look around. I personally do not think the design could be improved upon!
Lake Placid Olympic Center and Museum Lake Placid is home to TWO winter Olympic games- 1932 & 1980. You can check out the facilities and there is a small museum there as well. It's right along the main road so it's easy to walk in and an especially good place to check out if the weather isn't cooperating. You can even drive over to the bobsled area and do the actual bobsled run! You only go a fraction of the speed of the Olympians, but it still feels terrifyingly fast (not for Sally's age). The whole run doesn't last too long, but I would say that it's exhilarating to feel like an Olympian!
Lake Placid Horse Show During the end of June/early July there is a horse show in Lake Placid. It's an excellent show and kids would love watching the gorgeous horses jump around. I owned and loved horses growing up (they were my best friends), so any chance to just be around horses is a treat for me!
